Son, Be Holy

Be not unbearable in bearing holiness,

Let patience abound deep inside you,

For grace comes not in passing holy tests,

But in loving Him and him beside you.

Have simple devotion, like all truly devoted,

And not eager to add more, or pile on.

For uninspired resolutions are pride sugar coated

So await and respond when at you grace smiles on.

Be firm and consistent, and take the position

That judges intentions within, but not of a friend.

Patient in all, worry your heart’s disposition

Liberated firmly in contrition and freedom from sin.

If you lead, lead well, and do not push nor pull,

Cling to wise men and be guided by sages.

Obey your guides, for the self-guided are fools

And seek the Kingdom reigning triumphantly ageless.

It’s going to be quiet here, but not there

Faithful blog readers (and you new readers too!), it’s going to be quiet this week. I am one of the few in Fraternus that has stayed back while the brotherhood is engaged in prayer, adventure and all of the other shenanigans of Fraternus Ranch (shenanigans is a word that seems inaccurate but somehow fitting…).

The brothers will hear about their identity as a son of the Father, the need for serious conversion and a general call to virtue and holiness that has the potential to be life changing. If you have a shred of time and a shred of charity - say some prayers for the men and boys this week.

Pray for safety as they (inevitably) do dangerous things - whitewater rafting included. Pray for conversion. Pray for strengthened brotherhood and thwarted attacks on that same brotherhood. Pray for the families back home that are worried. Pray that God would be glorified.

See the Boy

When God is merciful and forgives us, he sees his son as he was meant to be. He doesn’t overlook the sin, he cleanses it so that he can see the son he loves. He sees the son more clearly, because sin is not a part of his created nature, so it’s a foreign enemy.

I think a lot of folks see young men acting like… well… my good friend Keck would say, "Actin’ a dern fool." (I’m proud to be from NC) When they see the young man obviously and publicaly acting scandalously, they, without self-reflection, condemn and put him in a box. He’s too this, not enough that and wont amount to much. This is very un-godlike.

God is eager to free us from sin so that we can be free to receive and return love. This is true life. If you find yourself being disgusted at young men lacking virtue, do not be too severe. The Church teaches us that the desire for God is in his heart. We know the potential of virtue is there. If we do not see in that "troubled" boy or young man the possibility of a sainthood, we do not have the virtue of hope and we do not believe that he is what God says he is and that God can do what he says he can.

I believe it was Fulton J. Sheen who said that the saint always sees the potential virtue in the sinner. In seeing with those eyes, we see reality. In seeing only sin, we’ve believed yet another lie of the enemy.

This is how Fraternus sees every boy.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Pray for Us

This past Saturday, I made a pilgrimage to ask the intercession of another of Fraternus’ patron saints: Our Lady of Guadalupe, Star of the New Evangelization. I sought the Blessed Virgin Mary’s precious intercession at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wisconsin. I brought many special intentions with me including the efforts of Fraternus to mentor boys into virtuous Catholic men. I entrusted all to Mary, our most beautiful mother.

A letter was sent by Blessed John Paul the Great regarding this shrine (11/11/99) in which it was stated that "His Holiness is confident that devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe will inspire in the faithful of the Diocese a fuller appreciation of the rich history of evangelization in America and a renewed zeal for the spread of the Gospel in our time. He prays that through Mary’s powerful intercession the Church throughout America will grow rich in the fruits of holiness and bear ever more compelling witness to Jesus Christ, the one Savior of the world."

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Star of the New Evangelization, pray for us.

Power & Witness: Video blog with EWTN!

The famous Colleen Nixon and I were on Life on the Rock last Thursday night down in Birmingham, AL. If you caught it, thanks for tuning in. If not, it will soon be posted on YouTube.
